Nyssa is a Melbourne based textile designer, specialising in hand woven textiles. She studied textile design at RMIT, graduating with a Diploma of Textile Design and Development. She creates high quality bespoke pieces of cloth designed to inspire creativity and imagination in the use of textiles in fashion, interiors and as artwork.
Nyssa relishes the slow, steady rhythm of hand weaving, building the cloth one thread at a time, watching the design coalesce into a whole that is somehow greater than the sum of all its parts. Her process is experimental and fluid, allowing the movement and interactions of the different fibres to guide her weaving.
In modern society the act of weaving cloth by hand can be seen as a waste of time, when it’s easier to go out and just buy something instead. In her work Nyssa explores what makes handmade cloth different to machine made and what exactly she is adding to the work with her time and touch.
